Folklore has it that Saint Brendan the navigator sailed from here on his voyage of discovery into the western ocean. It is written in legend that Saint Brendan discovered the North American Continent in the 6th century. The explorer Tim Severin built a vessel similar to Saint Brendan’s in 1976 and sailed from Brandon Creek and reached Newfoundland in June 1977, proving that in such a vessel the voyage could have been achieved. This vessel is now on display at Craggaunowen County Clare.
