Finally evacuated in 1953, these Western Islands, come into full view at Slea Head. Islands
consisting of Red Sandstone in the Atlantic Ocean. There are five big islands consisting of
The Great Blasket, Inishvickillane, Inishmore, Inishtooskert and Inish na Bro. The smaller
ones are called, Beginish, Youngs Island and Illaunboy. A great sea rock called the Tearaght
47 acres in extent and 602 feet high, and a horde of lesser rocks and reefs may be seen also.
The ruined Forts and Hermitages existing on several islands show the presence of civilization
in early historic times. Vikings raided Ireland in the 9th and 10th centuries
and were no doubt familiar with the Blaskets.
