Dunbeg Fort
|
Consisting of a fortified stonewall cutting off a triangular promontory.
Protected by an elaborate system of earthen ramparts and trenches on the landward side.
On the cliff edge inside the fort shows remains of stonewalling. The ruins of a
circular building can be seen within the enclosure. The great wall 22 feet thick
has an elaborate Souterrain [underground chamber] and a remarkable doorway.
An inner ground tunnel, which at one stage leads to the hill above the tunnel,
was said to be an escape route when invaded by enemies.
