Killorglin | Irish : Cill Orglan : Orgla’s Church

The beautiful Iveragh Peninsula gateway starts here, built on a hill overlooking the River Laune, famous for it’s Trout and Salmon angling.

Places of Interest

  • [a] Castle Conway or Killorglin Castle was an advance post for the Earl of Desmond built in the 12th century.
  • [b] Dromavala Church is on the East side of the river originally dedicated to Saint Lawrence after which the parish is called.
  • [c] Folnagower Ring Fort is near Dromavala Church and has an underground passage or chamber
  • [d] Blennerhasset Monument is situated opposite the Roman Catholic church to commemorate Townsend Blennerhasset, a member of the Kerry Militia, who while attempting to rescue a colleague, was drowned on the 20th June 1867.
  • [e] Railway Station – one of the best features of the Southern and Western Railway was the Metal Viaduct (still standing) crossing the River Laune . This line was opened on the 15th January 1885 and continued on to Valentia. The line was closed on the 3rd January 1960.
  • [f] The Pipers Stone – a great stone projecting from the ground on Courauree Hill used as a lookout post over the valley. The great piper Sean 0′ Duighgin was associated with this stone (hence the name) and tales of Fairy Music.
  • [g] The Stone Bridge – an eight arched Stone Bridge was erected by the contractor R.W. Johnstone in 1885.
  • [h] Mount Laune (Cnoc an Ard Dearg) – Folklore connects this Red Hillock with the Fianna and Fionn Mac Cool. It is composed of Red Earth while the surrounding area has black soil. This suggests that the hill was artificially constructed as does the regularity of its cone shaped form.
  • [i] Ballykissane Monument – this monument is 1 mile from the town and commemorates the death of the first three Volunteers in the 1916 Easter Rising. They were on their way to Valentia, to take over radio equipment, to signal Sir Roger Casement and the German ship bearing arms for the Cause, when their car plunged into the sea and they drowned.

EVENTS:
Puck Fair is held annually, usually on the 10th, 11th and 12th August. The first day is called Gathering Day, the Puck Goat is paraded through the town with great ceremony before being installed as ‘KING’ on a lofty platform in Killorglin’s Market Square. The second day is called Fair Day for the business of buying and selling of livestock. The third day is called Scattering Day because the goat is released back into the wilds at sunset with great revelry and ceremony.
